Managing an EP or Album Project from Start to Finish
Sondbord Team
Finishing one song is hard enough. Finishing five or ten that work together as a cohesive release? That’s a whole different challenge.
An EP or album isn’t just a collection of tracks — it’s a project with dependencies, deadlines, and decisions that affect the whole body of work. Managing it well can be the difference between actually releasing and letting it drag on for months.
The album management problem
When you’re working on a multi-track release, new problems emerge:
- Tracks are at different stages. One song is being mastered while another is still a rough demo.
- Decisions cascade. Changing the key of one track might affect the sequencing of the whole album.
- Collaboration multiplies. Different songs might involve different collaborators, each with their own timelines.
- Scope creep is real. “Let’s add one more track” is the enemy of shipping.
A board for the big picture
This is where having a visual overview becomes essential. When you can see all ten tracks laid out by stage, patterns jump out:
- Three songs stuck in mixing? Maybe it’s time to book a dedicated mixing session.
- Everything done except mastering? Time to send the batch to your mastering engineer.
- One track still in the idea phase while the rest are nearly done? Make a call — does it make the cut or not?
Tips for managing a release
Set a track list early. Decide on the number of songs and commit to it. You can always swap one out, but having a fixed count prevents endless additions.
Work in batches by stage. Instead of finishing one song completely before starting the next, try moving groups of songs through stages together. Record all the vocals in one session. Mix in focused blocks.
Use your board as a dashboard. Check it before every session. Let the board tell you what to work on, instead of opening whatever project file you feel like.
Set a release date. Even a tentative one. External deadlines create forward momentum that internal motivation alone can’t match.
Bringing it together
Sondbord was built with exactly this workflow in mind. One board, all your tracks, full version history. It’s the control room for your release.
